E Bay and Guitars
Has anyone purchased a guitar off from ebay? It seems like the prices are sky high to me and anything with a "Gibson" name is going for a ton of money. I think a lot of people are buying at "Guitar Center" or "Musician's Friend" and auctioning them off on ebay. "Musician's Friend" had a Les Paul "Studio" on sale last year for $799. Suppossedly this guitar is manufactured by "Gibson" for "Musician's Friend" While the guitar may have the "Les Paul" name, it is nowhere close to a Custom. Yet I see this guitar selling for upwards of $1500. Am I missing something here? Or is ebay just for chumps?

Friend of mine bought his Schecter off ebay. It was used but it plays like a charm. The neck is my favorite part about it. I, however, am not really so ready for ebay. I prefer to buy my gear brand new and I'm willing to pay the extra bit. It's a personal preferance. I could've saved a few hundreds if I bought my SG used, but it just didn't seem like it'd be the same. I wanted a brand new one to claim my own. Sooo, I bought it brand new from musicians friend. Cost me a lot, but it was worth it. There are probably some shady deals on ebay as there would be anywhere you shop. But the price of my colleague-in-action's axe was about $900 I think, and he bought it on ebay for about $600. I dunno, just use your better judgement. If you feel safer buying from a store then go that route.

Well, yeah the Gibson studio's arn't meant to be as good as a custom....thats why they are cheaper. The one you saw,or had seen most likley was made specifically for musiciansfriend or guitar center, but 'regular' lp studios and and the studio+ are a constant in the Gibson line.Studios arn't exclusivley for GC or musiciansfriend.
As ebay goes, the idea is to bid low and win...if see a 'buy it now' or BIN for the price as musiciansfriend or GC,then by it from the store and not ebay.Usually the starting bid price is low though and if you win...well then you get it at that price.

XChris, you might want to tone it down a bit, the next warning will not be friendly !
I've had two axes off eBay and both have not only been cheap but also very nice guitars.
Just remember if something looks too good to be true it probably is !

I bought my Bass Compactor and my Sunn 1200s off of eBay and I got good deals on both. The only reason I've never bought a bass or guitar off of eBay is that I'm a real stickler for "play it before you buy it."
That said, you need to keep an eye on seller ratings and watch out for auctions that go overboard:
A friend of mine put up Squire he bought for $99 new; no reserve, no real asking price... The damn thing went for around $200.
So there are some dummies out there who have no idea what they're doing who will pay WAY more than a guitar is worth, but if you keep an eye out, there's still deals to be had.

I have bought quite a few things on ebay and have never had any problems. I haven't bought a guitar yet though. Even in the rare event that something does happen....you dont get what you bought, it is damaged, or anything else, there are legal actions that you can thak through ebay to get it all resolved. I know someone who won something, and it came to him broken...not from the shipping...just broken. He filed with ebay and got all his money back.
If the price is real close between ebay and a store....I'd go with the store. If you are going to be saving hundreds of dollars than I'd prolly go to a store and try out a few of the same guitar you want to buy. I would do this to see if there is uniformality amongst the brand and model, and just to see if you like that guitar or not. If you like it, I'd buy it.....after throughly researching the possible sellers you might buy from and after checking out all the possible buys. Using the "compare" option is a real good way to....compare different bids you are watching and helps in picking out the best buy.
