I went to IU-Bloomington, but not for music. I only went for one semester, not because I didn't like it, it's a fantastic school. But IU is where I first learned to play guitar. If you are considering IU for grad or undergrad, you can't go wrong. The area is beautiful, the people are great, and the school speaks for itself.

darn... this thread started out as a nice discussion about feces... why did it have to go back to classical music? I say we turn it back around and put it back on the subject of feces cause from there it will, no doubt, progress into something great!

I dunno if I use hyphens in the word 'anal-retentive'... hey look at that I guess I do!!! so I guess I am anal-retentive then... I wanna know where Dr_Simon finds sites like that!!!

so... any suggestions?

hey I did a search and found this guitar, it is a left handed cutaway, priced at $302.99

I know nothing about that guitar, nor the website that you can order it from. I just did a search and came up with that. hope this helps

I'll probably be shunned right out of this thread for saying this, but I prefer playing classical on the LP. I know, it wasn't intended for electric. I'm not very good at it either, so I guess it doesn't matter. I don't go so far as to distort it or use a flanger...pkay, yes I do. Just for fun though.

I too have been learning a few classical compositions as well. I'm trying to become a decent fingerpicker, and have a few well known pieces under my belt.

What would happen if I put nylon strings on an acoustic guitar? Would that sound like crap (anal retentive tie-in)? :D

I think you'd have a hard time putting nylon strings on a guitar that was meant for steel strings. Nylon strings don't have the knob at the end for the bridge or tail piec, and the tuners wouldn't hold the other end very well either. And then there's the scale length. Nylon strings would not work well at the extra tension required, if they could even reach proper pitch with out breaking.

Thanks for the the sage like advice man. I suppose I'll look into purchasing a classical guitar.

Now should I do that before or after I get a JEM? ;)

I wouldn't recommend getting anything with a cutaway or an electronics setup, you essentially ruin the projection of the instrument when you do so. Now if you want something like electronics and a cutaway, check out Godin guitars, they are made to be plugged in, and therefore projection is not an issue.

Really look into getting something better than that if you can afford it. I have a Rodriguez Model B, and love it.

As far as classical on the LP, all I can say is that's pathetic. There are far too many people that think since Jimmy Page butchered Bourree, they can too. *Shrug*

Nice tab site for classical...midi files for some included

Yep I dabble in the classical exercises. Allegro by Mauro Giuliani was the piece that really got my middle and ring fingers (picking hand) into the mix...before I was limited to thumb and index only. Of course you gotta love Francisco Tarrega as well...who hasn't learned Estudio in Em right? I've gotten several tab books from book stores and guitar shops that I've used.

And as far as playing classical electric...they're are no rules. I play the intro riff to Malaguena distorted on my electric. Or with Allegro mentioned above, I recorded an electric lead on top of the exercise to great effect.

Thanks for that. I was feeling a little insecure. Apparently I'm pathetic. Jimmy Page I'm not, but I can butcher anything.
