Hello, I am new to this forum and I think and hope to find the right place to learn all the good advice from you experienced players.
First of all, I love to play guitar so much but I only see a small progress after 3 months of learning althought I practice whenever I can, at least one to two hours a day. I guess the first 2 questions I should ask are:
1/ what is the best way to memorize the fretboard?
2/ is it possible to buy video tutorials of the specific songs I like?
(I have tried to play along the tabs and chords of some songs I download from the internet but it doesn't sound the same when I play and listen to the song at the same time.)
Thnks in advance.
Ky

Try playing scales. I assume you know a few chordes. What I have started to do is figure out all the notes in the scales for the different chords. You start on the root note (the lowest sounding note) and go from there. You could even say the name of the notes as you play them. This not only helpes you with learning the notes on the fretboard, but helps increase picking, and finger, speed, and will help you later on with soloing.

Wellcome to THIS board crazywolf. You'll like it.
I'm sure the real playing gurus will be stepping in here with helpful iformation, something that's very hard to hear from one king called David. You'd be forgiven to think someone calling themselves king would know something.

To help memorize the fret board, use the dots, its what they're for. the first dot means 3rd fret, second dot means fith fret, third dot means ninth fret, the double dots mean 12th fret, then the next dot means 15, and the next dot means 17, and the next dot means 19(if it goes that far). Keep using the dots as aid until you memorize where the frets are, then you'll be playing wiht ease and be able to look away before too long.Yes, you can buy videos of how to play songs, just search the internet. Tabs and chords that you find on the internet are more guidlines than they are official ways to play the song. They give you an idea of how it goes, but some are accurate. Also, if the song sounds right on your guitar, but doesn't directly match the tone on the cd, it could also be that your guitar isn't tuned as high/low as it is on the guitarist's or that they are using an effect you don't have.

Send an e-mail to hosts, who have videos or recent lessons, and see if they can record a video tutorial of a song for you. There's a sure way for you to get something (if one host can't do it for some reason, depending on the song/style, then try another).

thanks for all the replies. I will stick around here to learn all the good stuff.
I have posted this question at the other forum but since i am here I just want to ask one question.
tabs usually have 6 lines for 6 strings and I can read that but standard notation has only 5 lines. How do I know which string to play?
Thanks. Ky

Context.

Just go with whichever string makes the most sense.

Oh, by the way, "What kind of guru are you anyway?" is a reference to Frank Zappa's "Cosmik Debris."

Yeah, I saw that. But the whole line is a quote from the Zappa song. However, nice job on the T. Rex. 500,000 Jolly-points to you.
