i know how to read guitar tabs, the problem i have is switching strings in the middle of the song. is there any way i can avoid this or become better at switching strings?

Quite simple really, though probably something you already knew but wish to hear something different. Well tough luck. Just practice moving from string to string. Make up a little etude or something that heavily involves switching strings or practice some string skipping exercises, just take it slow at first. Maybe practice switching strings with a metronome as well for help with accuracy. But that's really the jist of it.
