im self taught and i found it easier to play the open D chord with my index finger on the e-string, ring finger on the b-string and middle finger on the g-string instead of what i now know to be the correct way of the middle finger on the e-string, ring finger on the b-string and index finger on the g-string. will the way i play the D chord now affect my playing later on?

I have been playing since I was about 9... and everything I learned was very "proper". I believe there certainly is a traditional proper way but, it is more about ease of transition. I have had to change how I grab a chord depending on what is comming up next. My advice is if it is working for you and you can change from one thing to the other easily and with speed then don't worry about it until you need to. I have had to grab a D chord several ways to free up certain fingers to do other things....
