That is because it is not something you can measure with a ruler and ultimately it only comes down to personal taste.
My instructors page and www.studiotrax.net for all things recording.

Personally, I like Steve Vai's "An Anthology", it might be An Infinite Anthology.

Anyways, it's like a greatest hits albu, has every great song by him. By far, my favorite.

It's actually: "The Infinite Steve Vai: an anthology." And what an album it is!

I prefer Joe Satriani's "the Electric Joe Satriani: an anthology," but as far as normal albums go (not greatest hits) I think Satriani's "Crystal Planet" is amazingly well put together.

Satriani is my personal favorite.

My favorite is Liquid Tension Experiment 2.....basically Dream Theater with Tony Levin on bass and the Chapman Stick.

Oh, Derek Sherinian's solo album Black Utopia is awesome......probably the only time you'll ever hear Zakk Wylde and Yngwie Malmsteen playing a guitar solo duel, well, probably the only time you'll ever hear them play on the same album.
Some guitarist on this album: Zakk Wylde, Yngwie Malmsteen, Al Di Meola, Steve Lukather...that's all I can think of off the top of my head.
Check out my band:

I'm kinda surprised not to hear the Ventures or Dick Dale mentioned in here. c'mon people! There was life and virtuousity before Satriani! :D

Yeah, I don't like that song that much either. It's on his greatest hits album too.

Ya-Yo Gakk.

True, true. But I don't think I would buy it.

I don't know much about instrumental albums. I know I like a lot of Vai and Satriani. I like them both about the same. Incredible music. Now I can single out instrumental songs that left a mark on me. One of my personal favorites would be Manhattan by Eric Johnson. And then there's From Skin to Liquid by Cannibal Corpse.

Personally, I like Engines of Creation by Joe Satriani. I know that he uses alot of "artificial" background, but to me, it really emphasizes the guitar in a way never before done. Truly groundbreaking.

I know it isn't a totally instrumental album, but I have to say that David Gilmour's work on Shine on You Crazy Diamond is some of the most effective (although fairly minimalistic) guitar work I've heard. His work overall on that album is amazing.
