Well why not start with a second hand Fender strat ?

The Mexican or TexMex ones are relatively cheap and, if you get a good one very good value for money.

It is important to try several different types of guitar to get a feel for what is out there and it is also a good idea to try the very one you are going to take home as not all guitars with the same name are the same !!!
