One of my first books was the picture chord encyclopedia. It has photos and diagrams for over 2,600 different chords. Well actually each chord it shows is in 4 different voicings. But anyhow almost every chord you could imagine is in here. It is published by Hal Leonard. You may also want to check out books in a reputable book store and many, many music shops. There is literature everywhere out there.
As far as being out of tune, let me be the first to suggest a chromatic tuner you can buy these very cheap, I think around 12 bucks or so. Considering that it is for an acoustic make sure that it has a built in mic. Learning an instrument out of tune is about as comparable to learning to drive a car with your hands tide and blind folded. It jut wont work.
And picks are not nececarily a must. If I am strumming chords I dont use one. I know there alot of people out there that frown on this. But I look at it as "my music-my rules". Music is every bit as personal as the person who writes it. Dont let anyone make the rules for you, if it works for you go for it.
Well thats my opinion. didn't mean to get long winded.

hi guys..not going so well with the chords... :( its really hard for me to do chords when i have to like.. for example keep one finger on the 3rd fret and then SKIP a fret and put maybe 2 fingers on the 5th fret. Also is this normal? For some reason when i first started out my fingers felt nothing. Yet, for some reason yesterday i felt a bit more sensitive to fingering the fretboard. A lot of people told me the pain will get less as you keep playing and develope calluses but the pain feels a bit more intense. help?

I've been playing for 30 years. My finger tips are hard as a rock and all rough (gotta be careful on my chick's panty hose!). Yesterday, I practiced/played hard for 6 hours, maybe more and my fingers are tender today. However, I wrote/perfected some new stuff that is dynamite!
So, sounds like you've been putting some time in. I hope your guitar is set up well and not slowing your progress.
Chords - Try working on the simple chords first, two finger chords, then move to 3 note, or finger, chords, but only ones that use adjacent frets. Some of the Major and Minor Triads will work. Stay down in the first 3 frets. Example - E, D, Am7, etc. You can spot them in your beginners chord book. Even though you are only using 2 or 3 fingers, some strings can be played open, adding to the fullness of the chord, the D string on a D chord, the A on the Am7, etc..
Pick 3 or maybe 4 chords to work on at a time (like E, D, G). When you get to the point where you can accurately place your fingers on a chord, and transition to other chords quickly, you can start working on the more "stretchy" forms that require notes spanning several frets. You will also need to learn to "barre" strings (pronounced "bar"), where you place a finger flat on the fretboard, fretting several strings at one time. You will see this used across ALL the chord types (Major, Minor & Dominant), and is the basis for lots of rock, punk, metal.
Last but not least, try using different fingers for the same chord. Just because a book says to do it one way doesn't mean you have to.

Musician's Friend, huh? Are you from KC?
Sounds like you've got some good gear picked out. The Schecter's I've played had nice, thin necks. Great for smaller hands. Good tone. The Classics are beautiful guitars.
When I say "guitar is set up", I mean how it is "configured" or how easy it is to fret notes (across the entire neck). Lots of cheap guitars have uneven fretboards, warped necks and/or bridges that are set too high, making the guitar difficult to play. Many acoustic guitars fall into this category.
What guitar are you playing now?
If you want to make a move to a better guitar without coughing up a lot of skiv ($300 or less), check out a Schecter Omen. Very slick for the money.
If you're after a guitar with a tremelo, the Jackson JS (something) is not bad - a no frills rocker. Only drawback is it's not a 24 fret neck like the Omen is.
Oh, bass amps. Marshall-no. Your buddy will just have to shop. Don't ever buy an amp without first playing through it with YOUR own guitar.

one question...isnt a tremelo a whammy bar? IF so,then no im not looking for that right now because one,im a newbie with mechanics of a guitar and i heard that if you screw around with your tremelo you will go out of tune. and..well im playing an acoustic right now called Sigma Guitars.I my self never heard of this brand but my dad said it was popular. And well..it feels ok but im not comfortable with it,but i have to put up with it because i can't get a new guitar since my parents wont let me until i get better with that guitar. No, im from CA,SF there are other guitar retailers out there but this is the main one where my friend shops around. Also,to answer that other question, it does play pretty well, probably i still havent noticed how good it is yet i guess, since i just played for a few months.
