I have played crappy guitars through nice amps and, well they sound crappy !!

I'd maybe have a look at Epiphone LPs however you may be able to get away with a much cheaper amp though it will be solid state ! You can always upgrade one or the other later one.

The Epis don't have such good quality control. It is possible to get a really nice one however it is also possible to end up with a dog. Common problems are things like cracked neck joints (cracked housings to be more specific even in models being sold s new. Consequently it is very important to play / try the very same one you will take home with you.

Second hand is also an option. The Gibson Studio LPs are very nice. I had one and thought it was excellent. You can pick one up for about 5-700 USD second hand. It is also possible to pick up a practice amp (upgrade later) for very cheap. I think PRSplayer is selling a second hand 10 W Marshall solid state in the gear section. Worth checking out !! I have bought gear of PRSplayer before and he is a good man !!

I also see TeleMaster is selling an Epi LP. MAybe worth emailing both of them and seeing what shipping would cost.
