work with the basic time signature first like 4/4(common time) Count off like this: 1 & 2 & 3 & 4 & . After you get a good feeling for it. Play something basic with quarter notes. Just incanse a quarter note= 1 & count off. After you do that. Play something with 8th notes. basically equals= 1 count off then a & count off.
Key things to remember: First beat in a measure is the loudest(accented note) played. The &'s are softer so it's kind of like this: ONE and Two and Three and Four and.
