What are some good songs for a beginner/intermediate player to learn that will sound good and leave a positive impression on people?

Depends what music your into. You should play what makes you happy and keeps you interested.
Beginnery stuff I started with was things like "Thats Entertainment" by the Jam, "Californication" by the Chilis, "Sweet child" by GnR.
those are all pretty straight forward songs to learn and play along too.

Californication is a good one. 'Drive' by Incubis is also a great choice.
