EMG active pickups sound pretty much the same in any guitar. If you happen to like that sound, load up some EMG's and rock on!
If you're looking for tone, go with passive pickups, and hotter is not necessarily better. Tone starts with your hands, develops in the guitar, is translated by the pickups, and brought to life by your amp. You need to develop your ear for tone, and refine your tastes in gear, but the rewards are there.
Or you can stuff some active pickups into a plywood guitar and just blast away.

the thing I dont like about actives are that they do not range in sound and that you have to charge them.

I'm a tone slut so I wont have active pup's in a guitar. What's the point in having a nice guitar if aren't going to be able to hear what IT sounds like. Apart from the pup's the types of wood, shape, finish, neck scale, strings, and generally how you play the guitar all play a big role in the overall tone of a guitar. If you use active pup's, all you hear are the pup's. Someone could put a set of EMG's in one of those $50 squire strats (if they would fit) and then play it side by side to a $3000 Gibson LP with the same EMG's and you wouldn't know the difference  where's the fun in that?

I have a set of active EMG Hz PUs in my Jackson DKMG.
It is great for Metal and not much else. Sat next to my strats / LPs / PRS is the tone stakes in comes in a sorry last however it is good for metal !
So if you wan to play metal active is a good choice however if you are after loads of tone, then I'd go passive !

A POS axe with active pups is going to sound the same as a your LP. Why waste a perfectly good guitar? If you want active pups for playing metal, any old axe will do. That's why 'metal' guitars can have such bizarre body styling - the body doesn't contribute to the tone. So put some decent pickups in your LP, and corrupt something else with those actives.

I think its a misconception that active pickups don't have a synergy with the woods and build of a guitar...they are powerd for increased and consistent output..but magnetism is magnetism whether powerd or not.
Try once,fail twice...

I apologize for my ignorance but..can someone explain to me wich are the passive pickups and wich are the active ones?Āæ? what are the differences?Āæ?

Well unless there is wood or plastic they fall out !
But, in the instance of active PUs that seems to be the extend of their little party !
Hence guitars like these... made of plastic !!

Active pickups work the same way, but they also have a preamp which requires a battery to be installed in the guitar.

It's also important to remember that active pickups don't automatically mean bad tone. The dude from pink floyd, for example, uses EMG SA pups.

I don't think active pickups = bad tone, I just think they sound like active PUs and that is different.

One way to look at it is to consider the preamp as a boost pedal built into the guitar. What I don't like about active systems is that the pickups are usually very high output to begin with, so they don't get as much of their tone from the guitar itself as a lower-output passive pickup does.
The good news is that a crappy guitar with active pickups will sound pretty much the same as a really good guitar with active pickups. :)

So if you have a crappy guitar and you wanna wail with the metaloids, active pickups will get you there. If you have a good guitar, you're much better off installing pickups that will let people hear that you have a good guitar.

are EMG's the only active pickups available?
# 17
No, but EMG is probably the biggest producer.
