they sound completely awesome. What scale(s) do they use for them? a lot of the time it just sounds chromatic with some certain notes being held but Im not sure.

They often use the wah pedal as a filter or slow sweep. They don't use minor scales as often as people think...slow down there solo's and you might hear a major 'happy' scale or pentatonic.

A good one(and one of my favorites)is 'Blood Red'...It can be confusing at first reading tab since they shred so many notes,so definitley play along with the music.

Good luck and have fun!

Actually Kerry King is a pretty random guitarist , and I don't think he knows the difference between maj and min scales, and even if he does know , probably he wouldn't care !
My advice is to stick with the tabs if you can't figure out something yourself , there are many accurate tabs for slayer out there.

I'm not trying to play any actual slayer solos its just that my own solos always sound too bluesey for metal and I'm looking to metalify them a bit.

You may be using pentatonic scales too much.Learn the Harmonic minor scale, phrygian mode and diminished stuff.

Then forget all about theory , and try to put some unusual and out-of-key notes here and there ... Sometimes you'll get good results , other times not.
Also using the whammy bar in a thrashy style, like with harmonics and stuff.

I've used minor scales a bit and they sometimes work quite well and I've also used the phrygian mode, but not in metal. is 'diminished stuff' just like landig on a semitone below the key note?

Don't misunderstand me guys , I like Slayer ... They've got very catchy speed metal rhythms , vocaling , drumming , but their lead work is a joke !

A diminished arpeggio or chord consists of two consecutive minor third intervals , it would look like this :

e-----1-
b---3---
g-4-----

It could be extended infinitely , if you used any harmonic minor mode (like everything by Malmsteen) ... By doing this , you can add the e-4- note , which is a G# in this Bdim arpeggio , and you could extend your arpeggio to infinity (as far as your guitar neck can go).

I'll agree with you about the lead work on raining blood but just listen to god sent death - the solo's insane!

The only slayer solos I enjoy listening to or playing are "seasons in the abyss" & "deadskin mask" ... May be "angel of death" too.
