I get this buzzing feedback with my stratocaster , but it only buzz's when I have the tone selector in position 1,3 or 5. I have heard once that its because of the certain kind of pickup and was wondering if there is another way to eliminate this buzz other than switching out the pickups or using a noise gate. Any info is appreciated.
P.S. no smartass remarks!! :p

This buzzing feedback is single coil hum, the middle p/u on Strat is normally RWRP and in positons 2&4 this causes the Hum to be Bucked because you are using one of the other p/u's in combination with the middle p/u. Three routes you can go, Improve shielding, which will be an improvement but not a complete fix, Noiseless Single coils, or single coil sized humbuckers.

BTW, RWRP= Reverse wound, Reverse Pole

I have an SD Cool Rail in the bridge of one of my strats. it is great for Hi gain but not much twang !!

I also got me a shielding kit from Stewmac.com. If you intend to do the entire cavity as well as the back of the scratch plate, get at least 2 !

Avoiding computer monitors, fluorescent lights and TVs will also help. Even just turing your PUs away from them !
My instructors page and www.studiotrax.net for all things recording.

For rock another good option would be the strat-sized twisted tele pickup.

is it possible that it's the shielding and the soldering? I just had a buddy redo the solder joints in mine and it sounds much quieter

That does make a difference. It's usually not the entire issue, but it's definitely something to remember.
