Harmonizing Guitars

OK so I kinda stumbled on this one day..I played a D chord and my friend played F#m and the chords harmonized together. The sound was really full and i was amazed. I want to know more about harmonizing guitar parts together, so I can add the effect to the music in my band.

An example of where I saw guitar harmonizing was the Strokes song "under control". I know alot of people don't like the Strokes, I'm not to keen on them, but this song is actually very good and the guitars sound really good.

If someone good eduacte me or send me in the right direction that'd be great.

I know my theory is getting rusty, but think about what you did, basically you played a large D Maj 7, probably had that big piano sound didn't it, just try more of the same, and maybe try other chords that share 2 notes together, D and Bm or Bm7, or break it up and play combinations of double stops together, just a quick thought, I'm sure the gurus will be here shortly to offer enlightenment very soon.........................

D major add 7?

Let's just look at the triads. D major is D, F#, and A. F#m is F#, C#, and A. So all together you have D, F#, A, C#. This is a Dmaj7.

Well, there's no such thing as an "add7" chord. But a Dmaj7 is a D major triad with a major 7th stuck on. Usually, you see the "add" chords with 2's or 9's, when it's ok to leave the third out.
