i have both of those guitars and i reckon you should take the les paul standard coz the playability is extremely better

I say go for the Fender, but only if it has a humbucker at the bridge.
Try once,fail twice...

I have a LP standard Epi and its a POS. On the other hand I've never found a Strat that is nice. Take a Look at the Epi Goldtop or one of those dual humbucker Telecasters(If you want humbuckers)

If you have a couple extra dollars to spend you could buy an Epiphone Elite. They are not to shabby for the price.

I picked up a brand new Epi LP on Ebay for a hundi less than Musician Friend's price. The electronics were just a little weak and strings too lite. After adding two black backs, some coil taps, and heavier thread, she's pretty sweet.
Every non-USA Strat I've picked up was set up like crap (or just not set up at all), had equally cheap electronics and, of course, the tremelo is worthless. Not baised, my primary guitar is a strat-type with two hum-b's. But the Epi LP felt very good right out of the box.

Gibsons arent that dear. You could get an older one, or one with a repaired neck for around 900 dollars on ebay. Thats if you can beat me to them! :p

Hey Pony! I thought all the non-USA Fenders were made in Mexico. Where do you find the Japanese varieties? I'm thinking about adding a Tele to my stash.

This other site I spend some time on has some of the most knowledgeable guitarists you could ever hope to meet. Check out what they had to say about Japanese Strats.

Thanks, guys. I'm not a Fender junkie so I did not know. I used to have an old natural Tele, late 60' to mid 70' age (?) with a humbi at the neck. Still wish I had it.
Sounds like the American Fender employee that set up the Japanese facility really cared about the output quality, and the locals did too.

As it happens, the other one was a late-60's Yamaha SG-2 Strat-type.

The Japanese had some very strange styling ideas in the early days, but the quality of their products was second to none. I have 4 Yamaha guitars at the moment, ranging from a late-60's SA-30 12-string to a late-80's RGX-350 bass. And that number is more likely to increase than decrease. Tokai guitars are also highly desirable IMO. Try one of their Love Rock axes and you'll see why Gibson was so unhappy about them.

There is so much BS about US and non-US (mexican and tex mex) strats.
I have 3 strats at the moment, and I challenge anyone on this site to take a blind fold, play them, take the pepsi challenge and tell me wether they were made in the US or Mexico, assembled in the US / mexico whatever.
the Jap strats are also very nice !
I have a very early one (still made in the US an I series w/ made in the USA stamped on the back of the neck) with a maple neck. Lovely axe, the only thing I'd change would be the Lordathestrings mod replacing the trem with a block of brass !!

And as for the LPs, get a Gibson studio, they are wonderful !
600 USD second hand or thereabouts !
Mine is coming back to me and Im going to restore the PUs in my Classic to stock. The Classic and the studio look very different however I can honestly say I prefer the way the studio plays and sounds.

My pair of black 1984 SBG1000's cost a grand total of $1200US, including two sets of DiMarzio pickups that were purely a matter of personal taste. The stock pickups are damn good actually. I hope that there's a black-pearl SG-3000 in my future.

Lord: I have a pair of early 1980-82 Tokai Zebra PAF's if you're interested. Bridge is mint, neck is clean but with surface wear. No worries. These are straight 2 cons, cannot split.

Doc: I'll take your Mexi Challenge. If you've got one that blindfools me, I'll eat a pack of Dean Markley's. What a thought........kinda like a wine tasting with decibels. Pick the city....
