I'm about to get a small tube amp for bedroom playing. I know i want a tube cause i want the best sound for the money. I 'm going to spend under $300. I need distortion, but I'm not a metal head. Hope someone can help me out.
galaxie 10 or crate v58
Has anyone played both of these amps? I'm about to make a choice between them

NEITHER!
check out a carvin VINTAGE16(www.carvin.com).Its 350$,but the extra fifty will get you the best real tube sound in that price area.
heres the description from carvin.
"Carvin's Vintage 16 is the amp everyone has been asking for. This "all tube" amp features 16 watts from two EL84's and is switchable from its normal Pentode to "Triode" operation delivering 5 watts. There is nothing sweeter for recording! Great soak and tone is delivered from 3 12AX7 tubes. The Vintage 16 features Volume, Soak, bass, mid, treble and reverb (Accutronics tank). The efficient 100w GT12 speaker delivers a big sound from a small enclosure while delivering a clean classic guitar sound with perfect balance and clarity."
that would be my choice...

Wow.... reading that almost made me start drooling! I don't know much about Carvin amps-- are they any good?
... and that's all I have to say about that.

Carvin is VERY good.I had an SX200 half stack(solid state)and it sounded amazing.I cant make any comments on there bass equipment, live sound,or guitars and basses since ive never used them, but there amps are great.
The MTS head is an all tube head and is 600$!Re-tube it with JJ's or Groove-Tubes and you are still well under a thousand dollars!
check www.harmony-central.com for reviews of carvins stuff.Ive heard of 'bad apples',but thats just what they are...you wont find value better than carvin.

Here is my two cents worth... bang for the buck you cant beat the Carvin, Like he said it has real tubes and there is no substitute for tube compression at all and as far as reliability Ive owned a carvin ht1000 pwr amp since around late 1997 I use in my monitor rack and it does two separate mixes
We run it side by side with a QSC and for the 350.00 blows it out of the water as ive never even seen it clip also a friend uses a carvin bass rig and has had no problems ever hope that helps....jeff

I've never played their amps, but i own 2 Carvin guitars and they really are the best value out there. Great company.

Don't buy a CRATE they are nothing but junk. Check out the Fender Pro and Blues Junior. All tube and if you want easy overdrive, swap out the tubes for a set of 1 or 2 series Groove Tubes that break up easy. There is nothing like tube overdrive.
I have the Fender Deluxe. I have a set of "4" Groove Tubes. They took about 6 months to get warn in. Now at "3" on the volume, playing kinda hard they are loud and break up when I want them too.
