My suggestion is to learn the fundamentals of the BLUES. All American music is pretty much derived from the Blues. Maybe not bluegrass but everything else is. Rock, Jazz, pop etc. But like other posts have said learn and play what you like. I started with the BLUES and have gone thru stages from metal to Glass like noise to ethnic stuff and Iv'e found that my BLUEs background has stood me in good stead.
