how to: Jimi Hendrix blues scale transitions/improv
hello. ive been playing mainly Hendrix for awhile and i can play some of the songs ive learned - like Villinova Junction and Little Wing - accurately. but when i listen to Red House - at Isle of Wight or Woodstck etc - it drives me insane. i know the blues scale and i can mess around with it within (what i call) "the box". ive been messing around trying to 'slide' or transition to another pitch that corresponds with the previous one, like Hendrix does so frequently, but its just not working for me (..i can play pretty well but yea im a novice when it comes to technique). is there a simple method that im just missing??
(i hope u guys know what im trying to say) thanks, Julian

Hmmm... I feel bad doing this, since I myself can't decide whether this belongs in the Music Theory or the Technique & Style section. However, after a ponderous 30 seconds, I decided to move the thread in T&S to Music Theory and leave a redirect in T&S and delete the double post.
Hope that makes sense and I hope you find your thread! :)

... and that's all I have to say about that.

I'm not sure exactly what your asking. Is it that your finding it hard to move from one box to another, like at a chord change?

Hey if you're playing Villanova correctly you should have no problem with the blues like red house.
Where he slides is often the relative minor which is three frets down
from the original blues scale, and within various boxes and extensions.
Plus he makes stuff up constantly.
Jimi rarely stayed within the box- as it were.
He was never a mere player of scales
Did you learn villa and little wing from tab or listening?
I recommend listening after tuning right to the song-
and using tab only when you get stuck.
Much tab I find on the net is pretty well off the mark - except for here.
Try a little Nuno from III sides, for a change,
if you really want to pull your hair out of your head.
Good Luck

There are 5 positions for the pentatonic scale. Each has its own feel to it although you may not necessarily be playing its modes. Once you break the habit of playing in that 'box' you were talking about youll find a bunch of new sounds, although they are from the same scale.

Once you get the hang of how the song goes'Red House' ...the rest is about emotion, and feelings......I can't read any music, but I have plenty of emotions and feeling when it comes to playing....it will help try not to be so uptight when playing.... :
