Fuzz is the first distortions, mainly used in the '60's. When the sound breaks up it creates a treble vibration. Sounds "fuzzy". Jimi hendrix uses fuzz or early eric clapton uses fuzz boxes.

Distortion is way sharper. It maintains its roughness and is clearier or more sharp and distinctive. Has a tighter sound. Use extensivly in the grunge days of Nirvana, Soundgarden. Usually its heavier then fuzz.
