finally got sick of the 424 mk III and ordered one of these:

Well I just really buying it in for convenience as a way of monitoring lots of
different sources simultaneously. Like I can hook up the outputs from the
computer, The D1200, the PODs / other mic pres / drum machine /
DTExpress / run other bits of outboard kit with out having to re-patch
everything all the time.
There are mutes on all channels and insert points over 12 of the 18 channels
and, for the moment it does exactly what I want.
It was slightly more expensive the the Yamaha MGs (good kit) and slightly
less expensive than the Carvins. Though I bet the pres aren't as good as an
Allen and Heath or a Makey it is also about half the price !
I will have a go at running a couple of different mics through it just to see
what the prea are like but really I'm not that bothered as most of the time Ill
have stuff patched in through insert points. It will also not be in my critical
path either as I normally go S/PDIF or midi (in the case of the drums) into the
D1200.

I might would if it weren't Christmas time. My funds are pretty limited right now and I haven't even bought any gifts yet :( . It's gotten easier again to record on my computer since I got another PODxt. So, I am probably going to hold off on a recorder and save up some money for an external USB/Firewire soundcard for recording. Thanks anyway though!
