My wife just bought me a wah pedal. I love the way Jimi and Stevie used it. Anyone got any tips ...tricks ...leads... etc...etc..... that can help me utilize this amazing but frustrating to me...tool?...toy?.... Please help.... future cool gifts may depend on it!

....just make love to it.....the pedal, that is. For lead, try accenting notes by emphasizing them with wah, or try going really slow...for a phase/flanger effect....or really fast for a wobbly warbly sound. Or, cut to clean, and do some chicken-scratch w/ wah for some pimpdaddy goodness.

Try using it as an envelope/tone filter.

Move the pedal to different locations and leave it there, play for a while, and see what kind of rhythm comping or lead lines it works with. I've heard Jimi Page, Hendrix, and Stevie all did this to some extent.

I haven't performed with my wah for a while, but I still practice with it from time to time. I've got a project coming up it might work with.

Peace,
-Rick
Play what you hear
Listen to what you play
Does it sound good?

Leaving it in one position is an old Brian May thing too.
Using it to subtly accent notes is when it sounds best to me.
I got used to the way the Auto Wah function works in Amplitube so I started trying it on a cry baby and it sounds a lot better the more subtle you are.
The secret is to not overuse it unless you're really into Shaft tunes and porno movies, in which case, go nuts.

everbody has their own unique way of using the wah pedal, you just have to keep playin with it. personally i use a wah with a knob that allows you to adjust the range of the sweep, and tend to use a very shallow range for rythm and a deeper range for playing lead.
