I'm fascinated that so many are asking for various recording software when basically any software will do - for recording. I'd suggest everyone to go to download.com and do a search. I'd rather focus on the soundcard, that does not require you to spend big bucks, over the software you're using. If the sound is crap when connected to the computer what does it matter if the software is made by NASA or whom ever. Get a fairly decent soundcard. I use Maya MKII and it cost me about $215 (in Sweden). I don't consider that a lot of money if recording is something I want to put my time and energy in to. I'm sure most of us can save up to $200 eventually.
I hope I didn't come out as a total a-hole. Not my intention. Just a suggestion.
Suggestions on various software to finish with could be CoolEdit/Adobe Audition, SoundForge, GoldWave etc. Or try download.com for free- and shareware.
