I've always found playing with a metronome to be a pain in the butt. I can never seem to get the timing on the metronome right to match what I'm playing . . . maybe I, like Stratman, just have no idea how to use it. I've always had a good sense of rythym, so I've never bothered to learn how to use it, but for beginners I would at least recommend that they try it out.
