we get lots of people applying to be a host. so, we get examples of a lot of players. the biggest technical problem we see is that some players are used to being their own timekeeper, and their timing is really inconsistent.

I always recommend playing with an external tempo source. a drum machine, another musician, or a metronome. It will do wonders for your playing with any technique.
