I can actually do the sweeping thing quite well now, my only problem is that I can't get the open G string to shut up. Doesn't matter if I'm going up, down, 3 string sweep, 5 string, the open G is always ringing underneath what I'm playing and it's only this string, the others are fine. What can I do to stop it?

Thanks

Always have the open G string ringing ?
If you can mute other strings , then I don't think it's a technique problem ... Have you tried it on other guitars ?

I have that problem too!
when i play below that string, the tips of my fretting hand fingers brush of the string making it sound, i also can mute all the other strings fine but the g is a pain in the ass. if i move my palm down to try and mute the string its not very comfortable to pick.

When you pull-off , do you pull your fingers downwards (to the floor) or upwards (to the sky) ?
If you do it upwards , that might be the cause of your problem .
