Ok, since we are 12, my band can't afford to spend a bunch of money recording so I was wondering if anyone could give me suggestions on recording my band, cheap, but still good sounding.

Keep writing and practicing and I'm sure the opportunity will come eventually.

When I was about your age we used to record our selves with a tape recorder (like a boogie box). It sounded very bad but would show us when we made a mistake and which bits needed the most work !

The cheapest way to get a decent recording is with a four track. We used to record every practice with one. One mic behind and above the drummer pointing down towards the drums, one mic on each guitar (2 for us) and one mic on the bass. That way we could adjust levels of each instrument afterwards. If you or someone you know has a digital camcorder, they actually get a decent audio recording. It's almost like they have a built in compressor (I know they don't) and somehow even out the volumes.

Tascam 424 mk IIIs are a great place to start !

Couple of SM57s and SM58s and you are well on your way !

Don't for get about mic placement for recording ambient sound, that way you can hear your vocals and harmonies to !

Definately go with SM 57's and SM 58's. They are the best mics for the price..

Hahaha, that's WAY better than my ZERO mics! You should be ecstatic! I borrowed a mic once for a jam session so that my vocals could actually be heard. It was such a fun day. We all laughed and joked and had a great time. Mics are magical things.

I like to sing through an SM57 rather than an SM58 (just to be different from the rest of the world). ALthough these mics have the same capsule the grill makes a big difference in frequency response.

SM57s are usually used for Guitar and snare / toms and S8s for vocals.

Tascam portastudios (liek the 424 mk III) are also a great place to start learning about recording.

When I was 12 we used a ghetto blaster. Put it somewhere in the room where everyone comes through equally and play. I still have some of those early recordings and aside from the songs being horrible, the sound quality ain't half bad.
