Hey everyone,
I am having trouble getting ska rhythm guitar riffs. I've tried hard to listen and find the tab and play but I just can't seem to make it the same. I know there might be peddles involved that I don't have but without peddle I cannot play it. I've recently tried learning a song called, "Pizza Day" by the Aquabats and the riff goes:
e 6 1 2 3
b 6 1 3 4
g 7 2 2 3
d
a
e
and the ska guitar repeats that until the verse which is a simple power chord riff but that right there is what I can't get. I've listened to many ska influenced bands such as "goldfinger, aquabats, The Hippos," and alot of different bands and I just don't see what they are doing. If someone could help me that knows how to do this with ska-upstrokes and downstrokes then it would be most appreciated.

Ska rhythm is basically playing the chords on the upbeat. (not exactly but I'll use that to explain). Ok say you count 1 & 2 & and repeat. You play a muted dowstroke on 1 and 2, and on the &'s you'll up-strum the chord. So it would look like this.

1 & 2 &
--x--6--x--6--
--x--6--x--6--
--x--7--x--7--
--------------
--------------
--------------

It's alittle tough at first, but just think of playing a straight rhythm. Your muting the strings when you play a downstroke, and your playing the chord on the way up. Start slow and you'll soon get it.
