I'm new here, first post... But I was wondering... I have a solid state marshall head 100watts. I can't get my distortion set anywhere where I like is. The knobs are: Gain, Bass, Middle, Contour, Treble. I'm going for a underOATH/taking back sunday, something in that area type distortion. anything helps, thanx.

a lot of times the amp itself is very limited in its distorted tones. adding an external overdrive box combined with the amp distortion usually opens up some doors.

remember tone changes with volume.

Another option is to get a Pod and set up as follows.

Guitar into pod

Pod into FX loop return (bypassing the Marshall preamp) and use the Marshall power amp cab combo.

Another thing to try is a Boss OD-20 which dose everything from a tube screamer / blues driver to megametalmoltenmeltdowndroppedoctavekilleatdeath distortion (if you know what I mean). It took me a while to warm to this pedal however I now love it to bits.
