Hey, I was trying to figure out good settings for Dream Theater distortion. Right now i am using a marshall AVT 150 halfstack and running a zoom GFX-5 floor board through it. Can anyone help. Thanks

First of all, put this thread in the tone and effects forum.

Don't use the distortion on your AVT, 'cuz AVT's are solid state, and solid state distortion aint gonna get you far trying to emulate petrucci.

I have no experience with zoom effects (I'm assuming the GFX is a multi effect, amp modeler unit) but most multi-pedals have websites that you can see presets that other people post (I'm also assuming you can make presets).

Goood luck!

I did some research and found out what valvestate is. I guess it means it has tube preamp with solid state power amp, Hybrid, if you will.

This may make a difference. Usually you can fake a pretty good distortion on those kind of amps. If I were you I'd mess around with gain and EQ until you have something workable.

BTW what guitar are you using?

I'd experiment with combining different distortions. I use the overdrive on my Fender Ultimate Chorus in conjunction with a Boss Metal Zone, gain about halfway on both, scoop out the mids, crank the bass and boom, its cookin'. Using the distortion on almost any amp by itself isnt going to sound spectacular. The greats always combine the amp overdrive with an external box for variety and a unique tone.

Petrucci's rig has changed frequently over the years, check out his site for the current gear. I know on the 6DOIT tour, he used a Fulltone overdrive box in front of a Mesa Boogie Mark II C+ head. Currently I think he's using Boogie Dual Rectifiers, I don't know what external box though.
