Do I tap hard or do I tap lightly and turn my volume up for it?
Tapping and the rest of my guitar 'ringing out'
Hi, I've recently been getting into tapping. I have a simple question, when I tap are the rest of the strings supposed to ring out or am I hitting the fretboard too hard? When I hit it more lightly the rest of the strings don't start ringing. Is this a sound that would be covered up by a band?

I shopped around a bit on this forum and it looks like I have to mute the strings every now and then, yes?
Kinda like rolling the finger when you sweep, except you're rolling your hand?

When i tap, i lay my right hand palm over the strings lower than the one I'm tapping on and i use my index like when you do a powerchord to mute the lighter strings.
Hope that helped just a bit ;)

There's a nifty hairband trick that does wonders for that kinda stuff.

A general tip when you don't want notes to ring out and you are not using open strings is to tie a piece of cloth/sock around the first fret. This mutes all strings not being used.
