Who is a great slider? I know that it is a more or less ridiculous question as it all comes down to taste, but as I am not born in the swamps of Kentucky, but in the cold north of Denmark, I need a little guidens ( in my spelling too), in who to listen to. Bonnie Raitt is cool but not crazy enough, same with Eric Clapton, actually I think ZZ Top does some pretty decent sliding. But who is the master slider? who rocks the world in the sliding buisness? who is the Steve Vai in slide heaven?

Duane Allman
David Gilmour (but he uses a lap steel only)
Jimmy Page did some slide work

There are many others, esp. those ol' Delta bluesmen.
... and that's all I have to say about that.

On a more serious note, in addition to the egg_mans suggestions, check out "Exile on Main street" by the Stones (Mick Taylor is a great guitarist) or Jeff Beck or George Thouragood and the Destroyers.

Of all the slide players I've heard, and I don't think I have missed any of note(was that a pun?), Sonny Landreth is got to the best IMHO, Derek Trucks might be as good or better than Sonny in 10 or 20 years, but he ain't there yet, another guy who I've only just heard a bit of is David Hole from down in kangaroo land, he is pretty wild, btw Johnny Hiland is pretty good with a slide too, he could probably sit in with the Allman Bros and hold his own, cha-ching, thats my two cents, Clavz are you telling us that there are no slide guitar playing swamp-billys in Denmark?, it must be to cold to make moonshine there......................

my O my, damn that Derek Trucks heĀ“s mean. Reminds me a lot of Scott Henderson, if he just cut out the fusion crap and just stick the the sweat dripping, whiskey drinking, I-Dont-care-IĀ“m-gonna-die-tomorrow-anyway blues, I would be a happy camper.

Well there are some sliding wannabees in Denmark but no one worth mentioning. Not yet, just give me a couple of years,Ā“I will come out with the unique, Nuno/Lukather/malmsteen/Hiland/Derek Trucks technique taht will turn everybodys head.

anyone know where i could find a handful of good slide licks in standard tuning? i just pick around on my front porch, and jam over chord progressions, and don't really have time to learn covers from the greats. the few licks i've come up with on my own are getting really stale, lol.

the pedal steel (which i thought was slide with a wah, till someone told me different) guitar from jackson browne's running on empty album is pretty awesome

Duane Allman is by far the best slide guitarist IMHO. Listen to Statesburo Blues by the Allman Brothers.
