also what pickup would make a good partner for it at the bridge? in theory id like to have a slash like sound on the neck... and somthing with a bit more metal style power on the bridge... a difficult combo for one guitar id imagine?
pickups
im keen on the idea of equiping my sg with a "Seymour Duncan APH-1" pickup at the neck. but im confused.. can you simply place one of these pickups at the desired position?? or are there bridge and neck versions?

Yes, some pickups have neck/bridge callibrated positions, but not all. Some pickups are only made for neck or bridge positions.
I beleive Slash uses Alnico 2 pickups in his Les Paul. You might try a hot humbucker such as the Live Wire or Screamin' Demon (both by Seymour Duncan) in the bridge position.

yeah its the alnico 2's im after ... there seem to be a few of them on ebay... but they all seem to have a B after their model name so im presuming this means bridge... and therefore no use to me??? this is why i ask :)

Aaareet Geordie boy !
Yep, I'm from the Toon as well (well just out side it as I was born and bread in Wylam, went to school in Prudhoe !) and now living in the US for a while.
Just been to SDs website and yep the Alinico II pros come as either the bridge or neck version. You can buy them here in the US (32 bucks ~17 quid) or here in the UK for about 80 quid (yes folks that is 160 bucks !!! each!!!).
I'd get on to music 123.com and find out about international shipping, it may not be as much as you think if you are prepared to wait a bit !
If you used Erny Ball strings, you may want to buy some at the same time. The slinkies are about 5 quid (10 bucks) in the UK and about 4 bucks (2 quid) in the US ! I'm opening a mail order/web music store when I get home, gona call it Dick Turpins music store !
