Hi. I'm new to sweep picking. Can you experts tell me if I'm supposed to actually hold
a chord when sweeping? For instance should I play an Amin bar chord on the
12th fret and just mute the notes as I sweep or am I supposed to finger each note one at
a time? I searched a lot of websites and usually they just show the notes to play and
not how to play them.

Thanks.

Hi Ace, the conventional approach does not involve holding down the chord or triad form...rather each note is fretted individually and sequentially (sp?)...at least in theory...it varies from player to player. The main issue is muting especially in high gain situations between the fetting and picking hands. Some players can get away with actally holding down all the notes but end up muting a lot of what's going on with the palm of the picking hand. It's a different sound. There are other ways to sweep though that utilize different approaches with different results. But that's a different story ;-)
