Description

Jimi Hendrix first started out playing as a sideman for a lot of famous R n B acts and used to mix melodies and leads with chords and rhythms, starting with parts like the example shown here.

There's a lot to be said about being able to hold the groove down and at the same time being able to incorporate melodic phrasing into your rhythm playing. You never know what will happen at a gig. If the other guitar player doesn't show up, or if you're simply the only guitar player in the band, this is a good way of combining the two parts.
