Jazz Songs

Despite having a long history and giving way to a large number of sub-genres and new styles of music, jazz - in and of itself - is categorically difficult to define. Folks, ragtime and brand band traditions are the most common associations.

Stylistically, jazz leans on heavy use of syncopated rhythms, random melodies and improvisation. “Comping,” a unique jazz term, is often used to describe the chord progressions that a guitar player might lay down under a given melody.

Many jazz chords incorporate the seventh interval (seventh chords), which lays groundwork for corresponding scales and bluesy improvisation patterns to complement.

The list of great jazz guitar players is long, though Joe Pass, Wes Montgomery and George Benson are all worthy of mention.
