Acoustic Songs

The acoustic style denotes a broad category of music that is either written for, or more easily played on, the acoustic guitar. This genre is generally characterized by acoustic-friendly techniques, such as fingerpicking and light strumming.

California Dreamin’” by the Mamas and the Papas is a good example of applied acoustic technique, and an apt representation of the acoustic style in general.

You’ll also see the term “acoustic” used to designate an adaptation or arrangement of a song that might not have had a strong acoustic-guitar presence on the original track. For example “Let It Be” by the Beatles and “Kiss From a Rose” by Seal can both be easily arranged in an acoustic style, despite a less distinct acoustic guitar track on the song’s original recordings.
