Diminished 7th E String Root

The first chord we will introduce is the Diminished 7th:

  • Root or 1st

  • Minor 3rd

  • Flat 5th

  • Diminished 7th (or Double Flat 7th, Minor Flat 7th)

We'll learn how to to play or voice a diminished 7th chord rooted on the E string. Next we'll learn a typical jazz chord progression using the diminished 7th as a way to get from the I chord to the ii chord. It can be viewed as a vii dim of ii (vii dim/ii), or as an altered VI chord.

    Amaj7 (I) / A#dim7 (vii dim/ii) / Bmin7 (ii) / E7 (V)

We'll learn to voice the chord in a couple of different ways for variety. Finally in the next lesson we'll play the progression along with a backing track.
