First we'll start with the 9th chords. Here's a good way to get a nice stretch as well as form a beautiful chord. It's unique sound is enchanting. Try a few of the examples I've included as well as the example of how these chords might work in everyday playing. You can hear wide usage of beautifully voiced chords in the playing of John Petrucci of Dream Theater. Al DiMiola, many jazz artists, and even some of the rockers like Rush. A few extra intervals can really make a chord progression shine.
In [Fig 1]you see the stock A major Barre Chord and an A(9) chord. Notice the change in intervals.
[Fig 2] shows the same chord with the major third dropped to a minor third to give the chord a minor tonality, thus : A min 9. It's one of the saddest most melancholy sounding chords to me!
These chords are really cool for making stock, boring progressions alot better. give it a try

ps. the sound file included shows A(9) first, then Am(9) followed by a progression using chords like this. Its a totaly senseless progression, and it sounds good. just think what you could do with a real progression.
