In this lesson we'll take a closer look at the picking. You can play this style with your fingers, or with a pick and your fingers, which is called hybrid picking. Be careful to make each part sound clear and distinct. Having the bass notes separated from the upper chord tones is what makes this type of playing sound so good! If you choose a pick, play the bass note as a down stroke, then cross over the strings, then play the open string notes as an upstroke, then cross over the strings in order to get back in position to play the next bass note as a down stroke. Repeat!

If you choose to play with your fingers use your thumb for the bass notes & pluck the open string notes with your index & middle fingers.

If you chose to use hybrid picking you can play the bass line with your pick & get a strong accent on the bass notes while getting the upper string diads with your fingers.
