In this lesson we'll learn measures 1-4.

The pattern we will use throughout this piece is established immediately from the beginning. Every measure consists of one chord arpeggiated twice with ascending motion.

We'll start with 2 bass notes played with the thumb. Then, the index, middle and ring finger play the rest of the ascending chord tones. These fingers play the chord tones again. Finally then entire pattern is repeated. It's important to get this finger picking pattern down because it is used throughout the entire piece.

The next 3 measures change chords. Throughout the piece we change chords every measure. This progression is typical of Bach's style, with a lot of strict tonal voice leading motion. The bass note and top melody note often move stepwise up or down. But they always outline the chord progression clearly.
