Just like you saw that our I-chord chord has a first-cousin minor chord, this is true for our IV-chord as well. We called A minor “VI minor” because it starts on the 6th scale degree. D minor starts on the note D, which in the C major scale is the 2nd scale degree. So it would make sense to call it ii minor.
