What’s up, it's Mike from Guitar Tricks, teaching you "Come Wake Me Up" as made famous by Rascal Flatts. This is a modern country ballad featuring a multi-layered guitar combination of rock, pop, and country elements.

This song features 2 guitar layers. Guitar 1 is an acoustic guitar layer that provides the foundation of the tune. Guitar 2 is an electric guitar that adds some crunch and higher dynamic to the arrangement.

This tune also features piano, strings, and pedal steel providing a dense mix, typical of modern country productions. It has a lot of texture and dynamic changes that closely follow the lyric and story arc. Most of these changes in texture are immediate. Some are more gradual. This is a great opportunity to learn to pay attention to arrangement elements.

The song starts out at a low dynamic with some piano arpeggiations. We've adapted the part for acoustic guitar.

The dynamic ramps up for the chorus section, with some steady strumming of the chord progression. There is also a bridge section that brings the dynamic higher with some dramatic accents. The outro winds the dynamic back down, bookending the tune by reprising the intro arpeggiations.

To play this tune using only one guitar, play Guitar 1 all the way through.

In the following lessons, we'll talk about a 6/8 feel, dynamics, chord arpeggiations, and solid rhythm strumming. We are in the key of E major, with a 6/8 time signature, at a tempo of 78 BPM.
