What’s up, it's Mike from Guitar Tricks, teaching you "Just What I Needed" as made famous by The Cars. This is an 80s era rock classic that features some solid rhythms and killer leads.

This song features 3 electric guitar layers. All guitars feature a classic tube amp overdrive crunch tone. Guitar 1 plays the chord progression with some steady palm muted strums, as well as some wide open strumming. The second guitar plays the solo and adds some fills throughout the tune. Guitar 3 plays the synth melodies heard in the song.

The tune starts off with some steady palm muted strums at a low dynamic combined with some punctuated stabs for some added drama. The verses start at a low dynamic and gradually build into the chorus. The chorus features more wide open rocking at a higher dynamic with some cool syncopation. The solo is very melodic and features some blazing fretwork. The tune also features some choice synth lines that have been adapted for guitar.

To play this tune using only one guitar, play Guitar 1 all the way through, switching to Guitar 2 for the solo section.

In the following lessons, we'll talk about power chords and barre chords, palm muting, syncopation, classic rock lead techniques, and dynamics. We are in the key of E major, with a 4/4 time signature, at a tempo of 127 BPM.
