What’s up, it's Mike from Guitar Tricks, teaching you "Between The Lines" as made famous by Stone Temple Pilots. This is a modern rock gem using dropped-D tuning that features some great power riffing and a cool guitar solo.

This song features 3 guitar layers. Guitar 1 is a thick crunch guitar laying out some powerful riffing. Guitar 2 is a clean guitar layer that adds a sparkly arpeggiation to the second verse. Guitar 3 is a gain saturated guitar that rips a killer lead in the solo section.

All sections of this tune feature some textbook riffing using power chords and syncopation. The bridge modulates the chorus riff to a different key, but with more insistent punches that help separate the section from the rest of the song. The solo section is built around D minor pentatonic classic rock box licks. There's plenty of iconic little hammer-on, pull-off and bending licks.

To play this song using a single guitar, simply play Guitar 1 all the way through, switching to Guitar 3 for the guitar solo.

In the following lessons, we'll talk about dropped D power chord shapes, syncopation, and some pentatonic based licks. Tune your guitar down to dropped D to play along with this tutorial. We are in the key of D minor, with a 4/4 time signature, at a tempo of 137 BPM.
