Bear with me on this lesson, we’re going to take a look at the chords for the intro, which features the signature riff that runs throughout the intro and all of the verses.

We’ll start with the basic progression, which is 8 bars long and is our basic 4 bar progression twice.

Then move on to the 6/8 basic strum:
down down up down down down up down
1 2 + 3 4 5 + 6

There is a natural emphasis on beats 1 and 4 to give swing and groove.

Now we’ll think about the bass riff, which is a descending bass line that starts on 3rd string, moves down across 4th string ends on 5th string. It uses 2nd, 4th and open frets until the C note/chord hits.

The bass riff rises and falls, first in single steps:

A B A G F#

Then in thirds:

E G F# D

Then to a P5th and m6th:

Ultimately traveling down one full octave following a specific rhythmic pattern:

12(+)3 4 5 6

Finally we'll learn how to combine/weave the two parts together, keeping the counting in mind throughout.
