Now let's learn the song's verse! There are 4 verses in the song, and each one is played exactly the same. The chords here do a great job of providing harmonic motion and interest, which really spice up the vocal melody.

For example, the 2nd bar of the melody is a great lesson in spicing up a chord progression. Rather than going from G major to E minor, the E minor is approached with a II minor to V dominant motion, creating a temporary modulation. This melodic and harmonic motion is paired with very bittersweet lyrics (“All my troubles seemed so far away”). Little touches like this are what makes for pop songwriting brilliance.
