The solo in the song is almost as hard to put into words as it is to learn. Pieces of it are in time, others are completely free form, and there is a very thick wah-wah sound throughout the entire thing.

For most of the solo section he sticks to a D dorian three note per string shape that he kind of uses as a minor pentatonic at times. I personally think this whole thing including the theory behind it wasn't a well contrived and organized idea, but a free flowing off the cuff improvisation - and these are always the toughest to learn.

This solo is an interesting mix of odd rhythms and alternative rock textures, so your ear is really going to get a workout on this one. As usual I am going to break this down as best I can but I don't think Kim Thayil himself could recreate this solo perfectly or exactly how it was played on the album; and that was the point!
