When I practice new scales and patterns I like to operate with a concept called "mini-positions". This means that instead of trying to memorize the full pattern across all 6 strings, I pick just a couple of notes at a time and get really comfortable with those before I expand the pattern.

The things you can play in each mini-position will be different, because of the layout of the notes. So each mini-position lends itself to different licks and phrases. That's why it's really important to take small chunks at a time and be able to fully explore each of them. Now let me show you our first mini-position as well as a lick that employs it.
