For this tutorial I'll be using a cleaner tone than I usually do. I will get this from running my Telecaster through a modeled Fender amp with the volume kept low, so the tone only breaks up a little bit.

The concept of overdriving amps with the volume really only pertains to tube amps in a recording environment where volume is not an issue. In live playing situations you'll have to dial the appropriate volume and adjust the amount of overdrive or gain with a pedal instead. And this is true for non tube amps as well; they don't "break up" the same way when you turn them up, so also there you have to use a pedal or the built-in controls to get your gain.
